Follow an easy 3-step approach to choose the right injector for each job.
Even if it is only a small part of the airless system, the injector largely determines the quality of your work. Graco uses a color-coding system and three-digit codes to identify the type of injector. But how do you know exactly which injector you need for a particular spray job? Read how to choose the right injector in 3 steps.
Using the right injector is critical. In addition to achieving better spray quality, it saves you from wasting material and makes you work faster. Do you already understand the code by which each Graco injector is labeled? Great, then take a look at our 3-step plan to make sure you choose the right injector for your specific airless spray application.
Step 1: Your app determines the colour of the injector
Step 2: The desired fan (spray width) determines the first number of the three-digit code
Step 3: The desired quantity of material determines the last two numbers of the three-digit code
Step 1: Implementation
Graco airless paint injectors are available in different colours. Based on the colour of the injector, you will immediately know which one best suits your application.
For fine finishing applications with fine material at the lowest pressure
For every interior and exterior painting job at the lowest pressure
For any interior and exterior paint
For thin plastering and thick materials
For protective coatings up to 500bar
For striping applications
Step 2: Spray width (fan)
The width of the spray is determined by the distance during spraying of 30 cm (cm) from the surface. The larger the fan, the faster you can work, but it comes with a higher consumption of material. When you spray with a smaller fan you use less material and have more control.
Select your preferred spray width in centimetres and divide it by 5. The result corresponds to the first number of the 3-digit code printed on each edge. Thus, if you want a spray width of 15 cm, the first number of the 3-digit code is 3 (as 3 x 5 = 15 cm). If you want a width of 35 cm, the first number is 7 (as 7 x 5 = 35 cm).
The larger the first number, the larger the spray width (fan), the larger the surface you are spraying.
Step 3: Material production
Now you need to know what orifice size the injector needs. The orifice size (indicated in millimeters of an inch, e.g. 0.017) determines the output of the material. The larger the number, the more material can be sprayed . Thicker materials also require a larger orifice size. Many material manufacturers specify the recommended orifice sizes of the spray nozzle on the container or product specification sheet. See some common orifice sizes by material.
Select an orifice size for the material you will be spraying and the material yield you want. The spray orifice size is indicated by the last two digits of the 3-digit code: "17" matches a 0.017-inch nozzle.
The larger the last two numbers, the larger the orifice size, the larger the material output.
Always check that the orifice size you have chosen is compatible with the maximum nozzle size of your sprayer. Consult the table containing the smallest and largest permissible injectors for each sprayer:

Good to know!
Applied material too thick or too thin? Use a tip with a different orifice size or fan.
Try different injectors to get a better feel for which injector best suits your application.
Example: You have a 517 injector, which has a 25 cm fan (5 x 5 = 25) and has a 0.017 inch mouthpiece (represented by the last 2 digits, 17). This results in a specific material thickness.
Is the material being sprayed too thick?
Use a smaller tip nozzle (515 instead of 517) OR increase the spray fan (717 instead of 517).
Is the material being sprayed very thin?
Use a larger nozzle (519 instead of 517) OR reduce the spray fan (317 instead of 517).
